Something I forgot.

One quick, but very interesting event that I forgot to mention happened a few weekends ago while I was in the middle of all the Free Comic Book Day events. Mike Malve, the owner of Atomic Comics ran into me in the lobby of the hotel, and while I wanted the key to the hospitality suite, and the free beer inside it, he needed someone to hold onto a comic he had encased in plastic while he ran out to his car for a minute. So I says "sure Mike, it's the least I can do."

Needless to say, it was a nerve racking 5 minutes.

Special Spring Commission Drive

For the next 2 weeks only, 9x12 b/w commissions will only be $20 + shipping, but I'm only taking a small number for the time being. Message me if you're interested. After this batch, I should be pretty busy for the rest of the summer.

Real quick FCBD re-cap

My weekend was rife with little problems and inconvenient issues, but overall was pretty great. Starting out with my car breaking down on Friday, which isn't terrible as I luckily have access to plenty of others, so I ended up driving a car much better than my own for the weekend, but it did eat up some time and cause some headaches. Saturday I met up with Ben Glendenning and we rode over to our Free Comic Book Day signing together. There we met up with Tony Parker, and a few other local creators, and spent the next 6 hours sketching for the Hero Initiative, and goofing off, it was a great time and the staff at Atomic Comics Chandler was fantastic. Ben and I started a jam piece, that should be added to over the next couple months, I did Cap and he did Iron Man and here is one of the sketches I did for a local Dad of his 2 boys, they picked their powers, the younger one wanted to be able to turn into anything, and the older boy wanted to breath fire.

After the sketching I went back to the hotel to meet up with everybody, got to chat with people, very briefly with Whilce Portacio and Jim Valentino. At dinner I was able to be part of an amusing roundtable of chaos led by Jim Lee for a few minutes but I had to duck out early to rescue my girlfriend and friend from the clutches of a sadistic tow company. So I missed the rest of dinner, and the after party. I wish I could have met a few more of the Image guys, but it was a great time over all. Big thanks again to Mike Malve, the Glendennings, and everyone else.

Also! I contributed a Punisher pin-up to the Josh Medors Benefit Auction, to help him with medical costs as he battles cancer. There is a link up at the Emerald City Con site, my art is lot 21, I hope I can help out, at least a little.

EDIT - Check out this great photo post Ben put up on his deviant site.

Interview + Gimoles

Recently I was contacted by a 9th grader from the Denver School of the Arts and he wanted to interview me for an assignment. I don't know if he just chose me randomly from deviantart or what, but here's the quick interview.

1. How long have you been a working artist?
I've been cartooning and drawing comics since I was about 12 years old, however my first professional work was done in 2005, so for about 3 years now.

2. What media have you predominantly used?
Well, as far as comic book work, for penciling and sketching I use non-reproducing red colored pencils and sometimes a tablet for my PC and Photoshop. I ink with a traditional brush and India ink and Pentel brand brush pens, as well as an assortment of markers and pens, and for coloring I use my tablet with Photoshop.

3. Did you go to art school, if so where? Do you have graduate degrees?
I am an Honors Graduate with a degree in animation from The Art Institute of Phoenix.

4. When did you become interested in art?
I've always enjoyed reading and writing ever since I was little, I became interested in art around the age of 12 or so.

5. How did you get involved with a gallery?
I haven't had any solo gallery shows, although I was part of a group show early this year and I have also worked with galleries in the past doing lectures and presentations. Usually they contact me through local store owners and friends.

6. Where do you get your ideas for your art? Do you research, sketch from life etc?
My ideas come from everywhere, I watch a lot of documentaries, historical and scientific programs and they generate thoughts and story ideas for me, and I also try to keep up on current events and they can influence me as well. Once I have an idea I try and do as much research as possible until I know exactly what it is I want to portray. Often times I develop concepts with writers and other artists, so that's a great way to think of new and inventive stories and visuals. I don't do nearly enough life drawing or sketching, but it is something I highly recommend.

7. What percentage of your income do you make from art?
Currently, very little, but the potential is there and if I chose to adjust my lifestyle and cost of living, then I could make a living directly from my art and freelancing work. Hopefully within the next year or so I can move into freelancing full time.

8. How do you decide how much to charge for your art?
In my particular line of work, I don't get much request for original art sales, but when I do sell sketches or pages, I usually look to see what peers at my level are selling their work for and try to stay in the same price range. I want my pages to be affordable so there is an interest in it, but it is also work, and one should be compensated fairly for their time and effort.

9. Do you have any advice for someone in high school who is studying art?
Practice as much life drawing as possible, learn as many techniques as possible and study art in all it's forms from painting, to art history, film, comics, animation and everything in-between.

10. Where were you born? Where do you live now? Does the place you live influence your art?
I was born in Minnesota but have lived all over the place, including Okinawa, Japan, which really affected my outlook on society and culture, and helped breed my love for comics and animation. I currently live in Phoenix, Arizona, and the only affect it has on my career is the limited opportunities available here. Since my artwork all comes from my imagination, my surroundings have little influence on it.

And here is a pin-up I did for my buddy Mike (Lions, Tigers and Bears) Bullock's GIMOLES graphic novel, it's out in June I think, from Image Comics, go here to get ordering information.

more

More birthday card art for the 4th grade class.

Tuesday, March 04, 2008

A quick Hulk face this morning for a 4th grader's birthday card, per demand by my 4th grader,(notice I didn't say request). Spent a good chunk last night inking, and contemplating a decision.

Should I do hours of work for free, in order to get a job that will give me hours of paying work? I think it's kind of a slap in the face to do this work for free, knowing that they already plan to hire me, but I also could use the money and it's a good contact to have.

Ugh.

Hobbs Beer

First off, look for Hobbs Beer at your local grocer, it's a rare gem. Secondly, yard work on Saturday killed my whole weekend of productivity, so besides hanging out with the boys and inking a few pages for a client, this is all I did. A few drawings for my kids.

Hellboy Salad

Strolled across this photo taken at last years San Diego con where we all drew on the tables. So here is Hellboy, my salad, and my crotch.

Photo by the awesome Wes Molebash

Hump Day

Again, no new art today, last night I worked on some roughs for a potential job, we'll see if the Art Director likes them, I'm also starting a short inking job tonight and I need to work on Villains and a new Hollow short story for an anthology later this year. So, I'm keeping busy, but can't post anything yet. I did my sketch cover for the HULK #1 HERO Initiative charity thing and turned it in, I'll post it when I'm allowed. It's an amazing charity and good exposure so I am honored to be a part of it. I had to sell all future rights to it to HERO and Marvel Comics for $1. I think I'm going to use it to go get a Spicy Chick-N-Crisp sandwich from Burger King. No mayo please.

Weekend Update

Hey kids, just a quick one today, I had a pretty eventful weekend so I thought none of you would like to hear about it. On Thursday I got a nice phone call from the Phoenix Police Department notifying me that someone had broken into my house and they needed me to rush home, so they could enter the house.

Thought #1
"Shit!"
Thought #2
"I'm stuck in a drive through at Jack in the Box."
Thought #3 "The dog!"

So I race home, arriving at the same time as my X and the boys and the police have the place surrounded, K-9 units, about 10 officers, the works. They enter and search the house and nobody was in there, and nothing was even touched (the K-9's did more damage inside the house than anything else). So nothing was taken, but the asshole did break 2 windows. One was very thick door glass that has to be special ordered. Taking into account the age of my house (98 years), putting in new windows was a day-long job of sanding, chipping and cleaning. So I learned something about installing new glass old-school style, big thanks to my Dad who really did the majority of the work, and while installing one we noticed a hairline crack we made, so we get to re-do that one later this year.

(side note - anybody want to buy a unique, antique home in Central Phoenix?)

Friday night was the first Phoenix Chapter Drink and Draw of 2008 and it was fun, I mostly chatted with Patrick Scherberger, Ben Glendenning and his wife and a retailer friend of ours, but I got a little sketching in on something I have been dying to do, The Hulk #1 Sketch Cover for the Hero Initiative. I'll post that when I'm allowed to. I also got about 7 games of darts in with The Drunken Tossers, dart night is always fun, and I flat out dominated, so that was even better.

Sunday I taught a Dynamic Drawing Class and had a small, but interested and fun group and then I got to watch the Yotes game with my gal, so a great day was had there. No new art today, but check out the new VILLAINS PRODUCTION BLOG for some goodness.

Oh, and if you see a shady white guy in his mid-30's that looks like the type of ass that would vandalize/potentially burglarize a home lurking around my neighborhood, kick him in the nuts for me.

Miserable Weekend

So I had a terrible weekend where I taught a 3 hour workshop to some of the most dis-interested kids on the planet, made about half what I thought I would, and I fought with my kids a lot. The only fun part was a birthday party we attended. Here is a HULK I sketched on the card.

Pillowface?

I have been sketching this character from as far back as probably 2001. I like the design and the idea, but I cannot settle on a name or anything else. I love "Ghostface" but I'm sure that's been taken. Whatever, I think I'll incorporate him into my HOLLOW series. He'll be a good Storm Shadow to Nissa's Snakeyes.

Old Stuff - part three

A Batman for the kids obviously - 2002

A poster I did in 2005 or early 2006 for some film festival in Dallas or something, I don't even know if it was ever used, I got the impression the client was not too happy with it. This thing was 3x4 at like 1200 dpi and killed my computer at the time. It would take about 20 minutes to render any change in photoshop.

Life drawing, circa 2001

I really miss life drawing.

Old Stuff - part two

I thought I was the greatest artist ever when I did this Hulk, from 2003

then I followed it up with this He-Man (2003), which actually got me a try-out with an editor of whoever had the MofU license back then, which I promptly produced 3 shitty pages for and never heard back.

and some life drawing from around 2001

Super Tuesday is today!

Go vote. Go here to find a polling place near you. I'll continue the oldies but goodies theme tomorrow.

* Oh, and on a related note, you would think in a society where we can clone living animals and put a cruise missile up an enemies ass by remote control from 1000 miles away, we should have a better system for voting than going to a church (mixed messages anyone?), and relying on 5 senior citizens who need a magnifying glass to read their ledgers (no computers anywhere in sight). I'm just saying is all. One good thing though, I was at the polling place (church!) for about 15 minutes, and every time someone needed a specific party election form, one old man would yell out the party name to an old woman about 5 feet away from him so she could give the voter the proper form. 15 minutes I was there, all I heard was "DEMOCRAT" yelled out, so that was nice, even though McCain owns this state and a Democrat has no chance against him. So I was voting for the rest of you, I'm a giver.

Old Stuff - part one

While going through some files this morning I came across a batch of stuff from 2001-2004 that I actually kind of still like. Nothing great, but fun stuff, so starting today through Wednesday I'll be putting some of them up that some of you may or may not have seen.

Life drawing from school, 2001-ish

Day 1

Stolen from the online edition of the AZ republic regarding Obama's speech last night to 13,000 Arizonians.

His speech sought to counter criticism that he is too new to Washington, D.C, and therefore too inexperienced.

His opponent, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, has often emphasized that she is ready to lead on "Day 1."

"We don't just need someone who is ready on Day 1," Obama told the crowd. "We need someone who is right on Day 1."

Now I'm done.

Super Tuesday

I don't usually stray from my typical topics of art, self promotion and bad feet, but today I wanted to touch on something I have been feeling strongly about for a while now. Kazu mentions his thoughts on Barack Obama on his blog today and I felt the need to echo his sentiments here. The main purpose of a leader is to motivate and lead by example, that's why captains wear a "C" on their sweater, or the best teachers teach by demonstrating and inspiring. Super Tuesday is coming up next week and I personally feel the best option and best chance to regain the worlds', and more importantly our own, respect is Obama. If you have never heard the man speak, do yourself a favor and you will be sold. The fact is, no matter who wins the Democratic nod, it will be a minority going up against a juggernaut of tried and true, rich old man politics of the Republican Party and we'll need all the help we can get in November. The first step to that is choosing the best option to go against them, going into battle the best we can and I firmly believe Barack Obama is the nuclear bomb we need to arm ourselves with. Old white people don't need to be scared of change, the rich will stay rich, the bigots can stay bigoted, just give the other 99% of us a fighting chance. Go vote on Tuesday if you're a registered voter and support the system, flawed though it may be, it's currently the only one we have.

"We have an empathy deficit in this country that needs to be fixed." - Barack Obama (paraphrased)

Phoenix Con Wrap-up

This past weekend was the Phoenix Cactus-Comic Con, of which I was graciously enough invited to attend as a guest. Friday night was pretty fun but short, I arrived around 6, with just enough time to get to my table, unpack and head off to to a "sketch-duel" with a group of artists. The premise is simple, they take two artists names randomly and then pick a random topic and we have 15 minutes to sketch it out. I was on the panel with Tony Parker, Ben Glendenning, Madam M, Daniel Davis, Patrick Sherberger, James Owen and Daniel Bradford. At first the only person in the crowd was my girlfriend, but before the first duel was done it started to fill up a bit. It was fun and a good time was had by all. After that we headed off to the welcome dinner where my girlfriend and I sat at a table with most of the previously mentioned artists and had a pretty nice dinner. It was weird to be sitting in a room having dinner with so many talented people, people I grew up looking at their art like Whilce Portacio, or watching on TV like Chekov from Star Trek. Chewbacca and Bob Fett were there too, out of costume of course, and Peter Mayhew is gigantic.

Saturday was great, but busy. I couldn't have asked for a better spot, situated between Patrick Sherberger, an artist on the Marvel Adventures line of books, who really needs a web presence to direct to, and Mike Kunkel of Hero Bear and the Kid and the upcoming Shazam ongoing for DC kids. More on Mike in a bit. Saturday started slow for me and I once again wondered why the hell am I doing this, to be honest I had already been at this same con, twice before, with the same product, and for the first hour I no business as I listened to Patrick jot down commission after commission. But after about an hour or so, I got my first sketch request of the day, and from then on, for the next 6 hours I sketched constantly, no lunch, no bathroom breaks, nothing that would disrupt my flow and luck. I think in total I did at least 12 or 13 sketches on Saturday. Not counting the free head sketches I included with a purchase of my book Hollow. Sales on that book were decent, but Villains (with a low con price) did pretty well and I think this specific convention turned a lot of people onto it, so that's great. I also had alot of people with the Hero Initiative Spider-Man books coming around as there were probably about 10 artists at the con who did work in there, so that was fun. I did 2 pieces for the Art Auction and was lucky enough to meet the guys who bought those, both excellent guys and real fans of comics and comic art. I did a Captain America sketch cover that I almost wanted to keep, but the guy who bought it has been big supporter of mine, independent of any type of friendship, so I'm glad he got it.

Sunday was slow, as is typical, but it rained all day so I think that stopped a lot of the full event ticket holders from coming back out. I only sold a handful of books and 2 sketches, but it was still a fun day. I didn't socialize that much, or get out of my booth, but after watching a pro like Mike Kunkel all weekend, it really made me re-evaluate the entire convention mindset. He was gracious to everyone, completely humble, never without a smile and always excited to talk to all of his fans. He goes out of his way to make all his fellow creators and all the fans comfortable, and make the whole event a good time. His example and enthusiasm has really re-lit the fires under me to produce not only solid work, but fun work and stuff to be proud of.

So thanks to Mike, Patrick, to Stephen and all the Pearson and Comic Geek Speak guys who bought stuff from me, retailers like Mike from Samurai, Shawn from Spazdog and Brain @ Khepri.com, and to all the local guys I only see a few times a year at these things.

I didn't have a camera so I have no pics of any of my sketches, but here is a small camera phone pic of a Hulk I did that didn't sell and a She-Hulk I saw posted on the CGS boards, I don't think the owner was 100% happy with it, but it is what it is, and yes, the "3/4 pose with the right hand pulled back into a fist" was very common for most of my sketches this weekend.

Con weekend

Look for a big con-report Monday, packed up all my stuff last night, I have a good amount of product so I hope I'll be able to sell through. I'm part of a drawing "sketch-off" tonight against some cool guys like Tony Parker, Ben Glendenning, Dan Davis & Pat Scherberger, so that should be fun as I mop the floor with these clowns.

Looking forward to seeing all the local guys as well as meet a lot of the national guys, it should be a lot of fun. I'm also teaching a character design workshop on Sunday, hopefully we get a good turn out. Talk to you all on Monday.

Oh yeah, a few new sketches up at the SKETCHJAM!

Villains 2

Sometime in 2008 -

I'd like to start posting more sketches, even quick digital doodles, but I'll probably do it on the sketchjam site and challenge those clowns to match.

2008 - Sneak Peeks

I won't go into a big Year in Review, I honestly cannot remember which movie I liked best this year (loudQUIETloud, a Pixies Documentary) or any music that rocked my world. It was a year of personal upheaval and change which I choose not to discuss much, but I feel everything will work out. Professionally it was a bit of a let down as well, the VILLAINS trade did come out in 2007, but was finished in 2006, so it felt like, to me, that I did not accomplish anything. I hope to rectify that big time in 2008. Here are some sneak peeks.

This is for a project I hope to self-publish next month (if I can get the pages to the printer in time)

This is for a project that should already be ready to come out, it's just a matter of the writer, myself and the publisher getting back on the same page. This was approved back in July.

and here is something for summer 2008 if everything comes together as planned -

On top of those, I also have hopes to re-launch The Hurricane Kids in the spring as a web-comic and plans to work with a writer whom I have been wanting to work with for a year or so, that should start up after I wrap Villains in July.

Wish me luck.

* Also, to those kind few who are worried about my feet, I have begun wearing shoes on a daily basis and it has helped my pads immensely, and I'm supposed to get a pedicure tonight if I can stand the tickling.

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

Dear Diary...

Sorry for the lack of updates, I made some minor changes to the site here, nothing drastic. The lack of posts is due to a non-comic job I have been working on for the last few months, and while it is in an area I think I might like, this one has turned out to be a noose around my neck and has taken much longer than I originally thought. Hopefully I will wrap this up tonight or tomorrow and I can move on to one of my several other projects. 2007 saw no new material from me, so I hope to change that in 2008. I'll keep you updated. For now, here are a few character head shots for Villains Vol.2 I'm messing with and a couple Hellboys, because you can never have enough of the right hand of doom.

My foot!

So, there actually is a downside to wearing flip flops every single day. Let me say that I currently do not own a pair of shoes that do not have massive holes in them or peeling leather insoles, what I do own? Flip flops, and I wear the shit out of some flip flops. I can honestly say, out of 329 or so days so far this year, I have probably only worn shoes maybe 10 of them. So what do your feet look like after 300+ days of flip flops and 100+ days of over 100 degrees and flip flops?

this.

My heels and balls of my feet are stained from my last pair of black flip flops and my heels are cracking badly. Sometimes I feel like there are little needles penetrating them. My girlfriend says I need a pedicure, I say I need some money for a new pair of Sambas.

Oh, and don't forget to come see me this weekend if you're local (see previous post below).
